World Bank delegation visiting KCUS

RENOVATION OF TWO KCUS CLINICS, WORLD BANK INVESTED MORE THAN THREE MILLION MARKS

SARAJEVO (December 16, 2022) – The World Bank delegation visited the Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Clinic for Emergency Medicine of the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo, where energy efficiency measures have been implemented. These activities are part of the “Energy Efficiency of BiH” (BEEP) project, which is implemented by the Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning and financed by a World Bank loan.

Bosnia and Herzegovina recognized the importance of energy efficiency, and to achieve economic sustainability, approached additional financing for the project “Energy Efficiency for BiH” (AF BEEP) from World Bank loans. AF BEEP is a project of exceptional importance in joining BiH to the European Union. Aware of the state of public buildings and that buildings are the largest individual consumers of energy and, therefore, major polluters of the environment, we started the BEEP project, which has so far included 14 public buildings in Sarajevo Canton, including three health institutions, one police academy, a prison, an administrative institution, and eight educational institutions. We continued with the renovation thanks to the AF BEEP project, within which three more health institutions and one police academy were renovated in this canton,” said Josip Martić, FBiH Minister of Spatial Planning.

More than 3.1 million KM was invested in renovating the Clinic for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Clinic for Emergency Medicine at KCUS. It is estimated that CO2 emissions will be reduced by 362 tons annually, and the expected energy savings would be around 1,800 MWh/year.

The works were carried out following world standards in energy efficiency. They included various measures, from the thermal insulation of the facade walls, the ceiling towards the unheated attic, and the floor above the unheated basement to the replacement of existing carpentry and locksmithing, the installation of dynamic thermostatic valves, calorimeters, temperature sensors, and humidity, and a remote data reading system was established.

Investments in energy efficiency will reduce energy consumption in selected public sector facilities and demonstrate the economic viability of energy efficiency improvements, including reductions in current energy costs and related public expenditures.

The implementation of energy efficiency measures in public buildings began in 2015. The Project focuses primarily on buildings of high social importance, such as educational and health institutions and other general-purpose buildings. By the end of 2020, 25,088,140.12 KM (including VAT) was invested in the renovation of 55 facilities of health, educational and other institutions. The estimated annual savings amount to 3,044,353 KM (including VAT), and the reduction of CO2 emissions in the amount of 4,565 tons per year is expected.

The results achieved through the projects of the World Bank for energy efficiency in BiH (BEEP and Additional Financing for BEEP) are the best example of good synergy between the ministry, the project team, and the financiers because through an investment of 43 million KM, 83 public buildings have been renovated so far (a total area greater than 260,000 m2), and the comfort of stay was improved for more than 476,500 users. By implementing activities within the BEEP and AF BEEP projects, CO2 emissions are expected to decrease by almost 9,000 tons annually, while annual energy savings amount to 31,716 MWh.

The Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning as part of the Energy Efficiency Project for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BEEP) is the organizer of educational and entertaining workshops for 450 schoolchildren

To educate the youngest about the importance of energy efficiency and create healthy habits from childhood, the superhero Beepster visited our planet, more precisely 12 elementary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After learning that the Energy Efficiency Project for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BEEP) continued with education for the youngest, and aware of the fact that the education of young minds is a multi-useful investment of knowledge and time, Beepster decided to personally talk to the children and give them this approaches the topic in its way. In his super suit with his super fun and educational equipment, he talked to fifth and sixth graders about the importance of conserving energy and nature.

“The time we live in is marked by the green transition, the desire to preserve water and air quality, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, recycling, and generally responsible use of resources to prevent climate change. If we want to contribute to a better future for our society, environmental awareness should be high on our priority list, and this is achieved through education. We are convinced that education and investing in young people is the best investment in a better tomorrow.”- pointed out Jasmina Katica, Head of the Department for Energy Efficiency in the Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning of the FBiH.

In the previous few months, at the Beepster workshops, 450 students had the opportunity to watch an animated film about climate change, and learn more about the Beepomat, a device that illustrates in a simple way how the irrational use of energy from fossil fuels leads to global warming.

The workshops were held in Vareš, Breza, Visoko, Maglaj, Jelah and Zenica, and are part of the Energy Efficiency Project for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BEEP), which is being implemented by the Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning with the assistance of the loans from the World Bank.

With a unique approach, this superhero told the students that our only home can be more beautiful, cleaner and greener, only through their commitment, to implementing energy efficiency measures in the performance of daily activities, in which even the youngest, who are the future of the planet, can participate.

The superhero Beepster visited the elementary school “Mak Dizdar” in Zenica

The regular classes at the “Mak Dizdrar” primary school in Zenica were interrupted by the sudden visit of the superhero Beepster, who came from another planet to deliver an essential message to the students.

“Your planet Earth is in great danger,” the Beepster warned them.

In his super suit with his super fun and super educational equipment, he talked to the sixth graders about the importance of conserving energy and nature. He presented them with Beepomat – an interactive educational device that simply illustrates the consequences of inefficient behaviour on our environment, i.e. shows how the irrational use of energy from fossil fuels leads to global warming.

“You don’t want floods, droughts and a world without forests,” said the Beepster, who shared tips for smarter energy use to save the Earth together.

In a creative way, through the game, he showed the students how polluted the cities are, and how harmful the increased emission of carbon dioxide is, and explained to them that there is a solution in the form of energy-efficient behaviour.

“The most interesting thing about superheroes was somehow the hair, muscles and suit. At the same time, the most interesting thing for me at the workshop was how the camera could show the temperature and record handprints. I learned he could become a superhero by turning off the lights, not driving a car, but going by bike or sand. We can also install filters and the like in factories,” Imran Imamović, a student of “Mak Dizdar” elementary school, told us.

In this elementary school in Zenica, thanks to the BEEP AF project, energy efficiency measures such as thermal insulation of facade walls have been implemented; replacement of existing carpentry and/or locksmithing; installation of dynamic thermostatic valves; installation of a heat energy consumption meter; hydraulic balancing of the heating system; partial replacement of lighting fixtures; installation of equipment for measuring energy consumption; and installation of temperature and humidity monitoring equipment. The area covered by the project is 5,375 m2, and the amount of the investment was 1,078,686.02 BAM.

Visibly cheerful and happy because the students have adopted new knowledge, Beepster has arranged to visit other primary schools that have been renovated or are in the process of being renovated as part of the project “Additional Financing for the Bosnia Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP AF).

Beepster talked to the students of “Skender Kulenović” elementary school about smarter use of energy

The superhero Beepster knows that the world rests on the young, who visited the elementary school “Skender Kulenović” in Zenica with a serious task. The mission of this superhero on planet Earth is to explain to elementary school students through an educational and entertaining workshop that burning fossil fuels produces energy, but also releases carbon dioxide (CO2). It enables the atmosphere to retain part of the solar radiation and heat, thus preventing the cooling of the Earth. However, the large consumption of fossil fuels in everyday life creates an excessive amount of this gas. Because of this, global warming occurs, which significantly affects climate change on Earth.

In a creative way, through the game, Beepster showed the students how polluted cities are, and how harmful increased carbon dioxide emissions are, and explained to them that there is a solution in the form of energy-efficient behaviour.

“We have to help our Planet. We have to save rivers, forests and all other green areas of the planet Earth!” said the Beepster, who shared tips for smarter energy use, in order to reach this goal together.

“Don’t leave the water running while brushing your teeth or washing. Turn off the light after leaving the room, and do not waste energy unnecessarily. And don’t forget, we have to turn off electronic devices and not leave them on standby. Plant a tree, ride a bike and use energy-saving light bulbs,” added this superhero.

The Beepomat, a device that shows them energy-efficient behaviours, attracted a lot of students’ attention. The students were also shown an animated film about climate change on Earth and ways to use energy wisely.

In the primary school “Skender Kulenović” in Zenica, thanks to the BEEP AF project, energy efficiency measures were implemented, such as thermal insulation of facade walls; thermal insulation of the roof; replacement of existing carpentry and/or locksmithing; installation of dynamic thermostatic valves; installation of automatic regulation of the heating system; partial replacement of lighting fixtures; installation of equipment for measuring energy consumption; and installation of temperature and humidity monitoring equipment.

We operate through energy efficiency measures that are extremely easy to learn and apply

Planet Earth is suffering because its inhabitants use energy irresponsibly, which results in global warming, Beepster told the students of the “Kulin Ban” elementary school in Tešanjka. This superhero comes from another planet, with a mission to educate children and adults about the necessity of energy-efficient behaviour.

With a creative and unique approach, Beepster told the students that our only home could be more beautiful, cleaner, and greener, only by our own efforts, by implementing energy efficiency measures in the performance of daily activities, in which even the youngest, who are the future of the planet, can participate.

“With the help of a thermal imaging camera, I showed the children the amount of unnecessarily consumed energy from devices that are connected to the energy source, while they are in standby mode. With the help of Beepomat, I showed them the difference between energy-efficient and energy-inefficient behaviour. I believe that the children will keep the promises they made to me,” said Beepster.

The students promised Beepster that they will turn off the lights when they leave a room they are not using, use energy-saving light bulbs, unplug chargers, save water and plant at least one tree in the coming year.

The Beepster continues his mission

The students of the elementary school “Kulin Ban” in Visoko were visited by the superhero Beepster from another planet to warn them that the planet Earth is in great danger. He came to our world with the mission of saving the Earth and educating students about energy-efficient behaviour. He used this opportunity to remind children about the importance of intelligent energy use.

“Every time one of you leaves the light on during the day or leaves the charger plugged in without charging your cell phone or tablet, energy is consumed, and in order to produce it, a large amount of carbon dioxide had to be created somewhere and that directly affects climate change. Have you ever thought about it? Please do not leave the water running while brushing your teeth. Use energy-saving light bulbs, and plant a tree. You can become heroes and change the world by your behavior.” added the Beepster.

He presented his equipment with which he saves the Earth to the students of the sixth grade. This is how these future Beepster helpers saw how the Beepomat, a device that exhibits energy-efficient behaviours, works. In addition, Beepster presented the children with a superthermal imaging camera, which shows how much energy is lost when the device is connected to electricity, during standby mode.
