”The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” – This is a quote by Robert Swan, by which began the presentation on the biggest Energy Efficiency Project in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BEEP) at Energy Efficiency Conference, held in Sarajevo, organized by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).

This quote includes all of the goals that any Energy Efficiency Project should have: an individual approach, sustainability and responsibility, which the BEEP Project is based on.
The Leader of the BEEP Project for the Federation of BiH, Mustafa Čopelj pointed out that under the project in the next three years renovation of 50 public buildings in the Federation is planned. By the end of 2016 the implementation of energy efficiency measures at 18 public buildings, worth $12 million, will be finalized.
BEEP Project will provide support for the development strategy of the country by promoting economic growth, development and employment in the construction sector, by providing better services to local communities, increasing energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions. This project will also provide and support the Governments that have committed themselves to implement the relevant EU directives and regulations in the field of energy efficiency, and support the primary objective of the World Bank – Common prosperity in a sustainable way.
The conference held a panel discussion “Buildings Recostruction Strategy – the challenges, barriers and existing solutions”, the participants of which, in addition to Mustafa Čopelj, were Dan Staniaszek, BPIE – Buildings Performance Institute Europe; Eduardo de Santiago Rodríguez, Ministry of Development (Spain); Miloš Jokić, Serbian Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction; and Goran Krstović, German society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
”Public buildings are in really bad shape. This brings us to the conclusion that the potential for savings is great, but according to our project experience in many cases the savings and return on investment are between five and eight years. We must also bear in mind that the conditions of staying and working in many public buildings are well below the desired level. In such buildings the real problem is the lack of documentation, but it is a solvable problem. With all of the challenges, which I think we can overcome, it is necessary to think about the full effect when designing strategies. We will fail if we do not change the behavior of final users in buildings.”- said Mustafa Čopelj.
The Energy Efficiency Conference showed that with continuous work and constant progress in this area, B&H could achieve a number of economic and social benefits. It was also concluded that the further joint efforts and holistic addressing barriers at all levels of government is necessary in order to achieve this.
