It’s good for school to save energy!

After reconstruction of public facilities within the framework of BEEP World Bank project, second phase has been activated which imply measures of energy consumption and comfort level in renovated facilities before and after implementation of energy efficient measures. However, considering building savings, beside reconstruction measures, depends also on energy efficient behaviour of users, so project second phase includes motivating management and school employees take measures of rational energy consumption, to achieve energy savings predicted by reconstruction project.

For supporting process of encouragement and education for rational energy usage, with active engagement of facility users, BEEP started pilot project of comparison of energy efficient measurement within five selected schools, by creating science based methodology, to establish which project succeed to save maximum energy. Four primary and one high school from Federation B&H have been involved in this project, and have been part of first project faze: Primary School “Hašim Spahić” Ilijaš, Primary School “Zahid Baručija” Vogošća, Primary School “Musa Ćazim Ćatić” Zenica, High School Žepče and First Primary School Zavidovići, implemented within a two-and-a-half-month period.

With that motive, representatives of BEEP project visited schools and organized educational workshops for school representatives and teachers. Concept and methodology of saving energy measures has been presented there. During educational workshops, school management has been introduced with rational ways of energy consumption and measures which they will carry out to aspire abetment and maintenance constant temperature in school classrooms during long period of time. During workshop methodology presentation, project goal has been highlighted to maintenance thermal comfort in building. In practice That means to strive for ideal temperature od 21 degrees Celsius, is considered in domain of energy efficient as temperature of rational energy consumption.

OS Hasim Spahic Ilijas(1)

With special elaborated methodology in all selected schools, monthly energy use for space heating will be calculated. Monthly heating calculated requirements and achieved savings will be compared every 15 days, and will last until the 15th of April this year. School which, in addressed period of measurement will achieve maximised energy savings estimated by elaborated methodology, will receive stimulation for continuation of work and endeavour – android mobile phone and thermal imaging camera for smartphone.

BEEP project is actually most involved energy efficient project ever in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because beside quality preparation activities, measures of before/after implemented energy efficient consumption, have been also working on education of school employees about rational energy consumption with usage of monitoring and evaluation. All activities for facilities beneficiaries should provide maximal usage of energy efficient measures, and finally save them money.

Thanks to energy efficiency measures, more than 10,000 children of the FBiH will be in warm classrooms in the second semester

For the first time in many years, a comprehensive reconstruction of primary and secondary schools in the Federation was carried out.

Over the past month we reminded what it means to be exposed to extremely low temperatures. Surprised by two-digit numbers with a minus sign, we stayed in the comfort of our own homes and carefully analysed the weather, which we didn’t face for many years, shared it on social networks and made comparisons with the coldest areas of the planet Earth.

And as usual, only extreme situations, in this case the weather conditions that disrupt our own comfort and quality of life, lead us to think about those who are in continuously comfort missing.

Thankfully, there are projects and initiatives aiming to continually reflect on the needs for improving the quality of life, as well as the level of comfort in the residing rooms.

This year, more than 10,000 students of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina will return in to the classrooms with a really warm welcome.

The first school bell of the second semester, in the nine primary and four secondary schools in the FBiH, will mark the beginning of their sojourn in the newly renovated, and energy-efficient warmed buildings. More comfortable and better working conditions were provided by World Bank project “Energy Efficiency in BiH” (BEEP), which is implemented within the Federation Ministry of Physical Planning (FMPP).

Within the BEEP project, Energy efficiency measures were ensured that the teaching and acquisition of new knowledge in the future takes place in increased comfort conditions, through the implementation of the installation of thermal insulation on facades, roofs reconstruction, new heating system installation, holes and boiler replacements followed by other measures in primary schools “Srednje” and “Hašim Spahić” in Ilijaš, “IV Osnovna škola Mostar ” in Mostar, “Hamdija Kreševljaković” in Kakanj, “Zahid Baručija” in Vogošća, “Musa Ćazim Ćatić” in Zenica, “Prva osnovna škola” in Zavidovići, “fra. Didaka Bundića” in Čitluk, and “Crnići” in Stolac.

Beside primary schools, these measures were implemented in high schools “Čapljina”, “Konjic”, “Srednja građevinska škola Juraj Dalmatinac” and “Srednja mješovita škola Žepče”.

The worth of total investment in the implementation of energy efficiency measures in these educational institutions is 6.42 million.

“This is a big step towards achieving the goals of sustainable energy efficient public buildings. For the first time in many years, a comprehensive reconstruction of primary and secondary schools in the Federation was carried out. Now, we expect significantly lower heating bills and a higher quality education in municipalities and cities where energy efficiency measures were implemented. Achieved results in the project present a method of solving the challenge of high energy intensity and excessive energy consumption in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in a sustainable way” said Čopelj Mustafa, Project Manager “Energy efficiency in BiH” for FB&H, regarding to the beginning of the new semester in the renovated buildings.

ova91

Even though a true value of the project to its final beneficiaries is in measurable, it’s implications can be measured related to the level of support that BEEP provides to the development strategy of the country. BEEP promotes economic growth in it’s own way, with development and employment in the construction sector, providing better services to local communities, increasing energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions. At the same time, this project provides support to governments that are committed to implement the relevant EU directives and regulations in the field of energy efficiency, and supports the main goal of the World Bank – Common prosperity in a sustainable way. Also, with successfully realized examples of energy-efficient renovation of primary and secondary schools in the Federation, comes an adequate development of these local communities.

Residing in renovated schools, youth and youngsters also acquire important knowledge about the use of energy, and most importantly, parents no longer have to worry that their children will sit in cold classrooms during prolonged low temperatures in the coming winter period.

Implementation of the energy efficiency project completed at elementary school “Hamdija Kreševljaković” in Kakanj

In «Hamdija Kreševljaković» elementary school in Kakanj, a ceremony was held to mark completion of the renovation of the school building within the World Bank project “Bosnia Energy Efficiency Project” (BEEP). Energy efficiency measures were implemented on this renovation project in the past four months. Thermo process at the school building included complete thermal insulation of external walls and roof, replacement and renovation of doors and windows so as holes in the building and also improvement of central heating system.

Completion of works was marked by the commemorative ceremony whom, among others, attended the Head of the World Bank project “Energy Efficiency in BiH” in FBiH, Mustafa Čopelj and Minister for Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Zenica-Doboj Canton Mensur Sinanović.

During the cutting of red tape, in his speech of thanks, Čopelj Mustafa said that the fund savings from the implementation of energy efficiency measures, are intended to be repaid as a loan to the World Bank, and then added: “The idea of the project is that this favorable loan repays from achieved savings. Therefore, it is very important that users properly take care of a renovated thermo building followed by adequate staff training for rational use of energy. I point out that energy efficiency project was implemented at 18 public buildings, with a total investment of 10.5 million only in the works, in the past year in the Federation of BiH. It is our desire to repeat the successful results of 2016. also in 2017., cooperating with other cantons the same way we have cooperated with the Government of Zenica-Doboj Canton.”

Appreciation of thanks for the allocation of financial resources for the implementation of the project was awarded to the Prime Minister of Zenica-Doboj Canton Miralem Galijašević, which was, in his name, taken by Minister Sinanović, who expressed his satisfaction for the Government of Zenica-Doboj Canton’s participation in the project. “The project will last three years in the period from 2016. to 2018. The Canton Government has entered into a loan arrangement with the World Bank in the amount of about 2 million KM. We intend warming 12 more school buildings this year, but with the big interest of other cantons we might not be in a position to warm up all the planned facilities.” – said the Minister Sinanović.

Activities within the BEEP project are realized with the intention to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions, to increase the level of comfort in buildings, to provide new jobs in the construction sector and to increase public awareness of energy efficiency.
